How to Turn a Story Into an Animated Video With AI (2026)

To turn a story into an animated video with AI, write a short scene-by-scene script, lock your main character's look in one description, then use a story video tool (MagicLight, Picsart Storyline, Animaker, Steve AI) for a linear film or an interactive app (FICT, Cutscene, Gameer) if you want viewers to choose what happens next.
"Make my story into a cartoon" sounds like one job, but the tools that promise it work in very different ways. Some take a full script and hand back a finished film with a narrator. Some make one five-second shot at a time and leave the editing to you. A few build the story as you go and let you, or your viewer, pick the next scene.
This guide compares ten tools we checked on their own websites and store pages on 2026-10-19, explains the one problem all of them share (keeping the same character from scene to scene), and gives a six-step workflow you can use with any of them.
Which AI tools turn a story into an animated video?
The table lists only what each company states on its own pages. "Not stated" means we could not find it there, not that the feature is missing.
| Tool | What it makes (and where) | Same character across scenes (as advertised) | Viewer chooses what happens? | Free option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MagicLight | A multi-scene animated video with voiceover and subtitles, from an idea, script or story (web, iOS, Android) | Yes | Not stated | Limited free credits, no card |
| Picsart Storyline | Script, narration and scenes from a prompt or short idea, as one video or separate parts (web) | Yes | Not stated | Not stated |
| Animaker | A full video with scenes, characters, voiceover and lip sync from a text prompt (web, iOS, Android) | Not stated (has a character builder) | Not stated | Yes, with watermark |
| Steve AI | An animated or live-action video with AI voiceover from a script, audio, image or blog post (web, iOS) | Not stated (300+ stock characters) | Not stated | 1,200 seconds of AI video and 200 credits |

| Morphic | Video clips and storyboards, with a short film creator workflow (web) | Yes, reuse characters and style | Not stated | 20 credits |
| Krikey AI | 3D character animation with lip sync from a prompt, video or image (web) | Not stated | Not stated | 20 one-time credits |
| Cutscene | 5-second clips joined into a playable story graph, shared by link (web) | Yes, matched to a portrait | Yes | Free to start (amount not stated) |
| Gameer | A browser game with cinematic scenes from a story prompt (web) | Not stated | Yes, choices set by the creator | Free tier |
| FICT | 5 or 10 second animated scenes with narration or dialogue that join into one film, from a What if premise (iOS, Android) | The premise carries your hero through every scene | Yes, three suggestions or your own, every scene | 20 credits and a free sample film |
A few details that did not fit the table. MagicLight's website says videos can run up to 50 minutes, while its iOS listing says up to 30 minutes per video with a subscription, so check the current limit before you plan a long film. Animaker caps video length by plan (5, 15 or 30 minutes). Prices change often and several pricing pages showed launch promotions on the day we checked, so we left exact prices out; open each tool's pricing page before paying. We could not load Canva's pages, so it is not in the table.
Story video tool, clip generator or interactive story app?
Most confusion comes from mixing up three kinds of tool.
- Story video tools (MagicLight, Picsart Storyline, Animaker, Steve AI) start from a whole script. You get a linear film with narration, which suits bedtime stories, explainers and YouTube storytelling channels.
- Clip and shot tools (LTX Studio, Morphic, Krikey AI, and general video models such as Runway or Kling covered in What Is an AI Movie Maker?) give you more control over each shot, but you assemble the story yourself.
- Interactive story apps (FICT, Cutscene, Gameer) treat the story as a set of choices. The film grows scene by scene from what someone picks, so you don't need a finished script before you start.
If you already have a finished story and want a video to post, a story video tool is the shortest path. If you have only a premise and want to find out what happens, an interactive app fits better. For anime looks specifically, see AI anime video generators.
Why does my character look different in every scene?
This is the most common complaint, and it is not just you. AI video models make each shot from a description, and small changes in wording, angle or lighting produce a slightly different face or outfit. NVIDIA researchers describe multi-shot character consistency as an open problem: the same internal features that hold a character's identity also drive motion, so forcing the identity to stay fixed tends to make the video stiffer (Atzmon et al., 2024). Zapier's 2026 review of video generators makes a similar practical point: even strong models struggle with complex scenes full of moving characters, and simpler scenes come out better.
What helps in practice:
- Use the tool's character feature (a saved character, a reference portrait) when it has one, rather than describing the hero fresh each time.
- Write one fixed character line and paste it unchanged into every scene: age, hair, one distinctive clothing item, art style. "A girl of about ten in a red hooded coat, short brown hair, watercolor style" is better than "the girl".
- Keep one or two characters per shot. Crowds and fast action are where faces drift most.
- Keep the art style constant. Switching from anime to 3D mid-story breaks the illusion faster than any face change.
How to turn a story into an animated video: 6 steps
- Cut the story to scenes. Write one line per scene: where we are, who is there, what changes. A 1 to 2 minute video is usually 8 to 15 short scenes. If you need ideas, start from our 60 short story ideas.
- Write the character line and style line. One sentence for each main character, one for the look (watercolor, anime, 3D, painted). Reuse them word for word.
- Pick the tool by goal using the table: linear film, shot-by-shot control, or a story people play.
- Generate one scene and check it before generating the rest. Fix the character line now, not after 15 scenes.
- Add voice and text. Most story video tools include narration; keep lines short so they fit a 5 to 10 second shot.
- Review the whole film once in order and regenerate the scenes where the character, outfit or setting jumps.
How to make an interactive animated story in FICT
FICT is our app, so here is exactly what it does and does not do. You start with a "What if…" premise, choosing a protagonist, world, mood and art style such as anime, watercolor or 3D, or you pick a story from the in-app shelf. FICT makes a 5 or 10 second animated scene with narration or dialogue. After each scene you choose one of three suggested actions or type your own, and that choice becomes the next scene. There is no length limit, choices can't be undone, and the finished film replays from the start.
Each 5-second scene costs 10 credits and a 10-second scene 20; new players get 20 credits and a free sample film, and a failed generation is refunded once. FICT Director subscriptions are optional (US $8.99 weekly or US $59.99 yearly, local price shown in the app, no free trial, not unlimited). There is no login and no public feed.
FICT is not the right tool if you already have a finished 10-minute script and want it narrated end to end; a story video tool will do that faster. It fits when you have a premise and want to watch the story take shape while you decide what happens. For more on that format, read AI choose your own adventure: text vs. animated apps or the phone walkthrough in How to Make an AI Short Film.
Write a “what if…”, watch the scene, choose what happens next. New players get 20 free credits.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI turn my story into an animated video?
Yes. Story video tools such as MagicLight, Picsart Storyline, Animaker and Steve AI take a script or story text and return a multi-scene video with voiceover. Clip generators make one shot at a time, so you join the clips yourself. Results still need checking for character drift between scenes.
Which AI keeps the same character in every scene?
Several tools advertise it, including MagicLight, Picsart Storyline, LTX Studio, Morphic and Cutscene, usually through a saved character or a reference portrait. Research from NVIDIA shows multi-shot character consistency is still an open problem, so keep descriptions identical and review every scene.
Is there a free AI cartoon story maker?
Most tools have a free tier or free credits as of October 2026: MagicLight, Animaker (with watermark), Steve AI, Morphic, Krikey AI, LTX Studio and Gameer all list one. Free tiers are limited, so expect short videos, watermarks or one-time credits.
Can I make an animated story on my phone?
Yes. MagicLight and Animaker have iPhone and Android apps, Steve AI has an iPhone app, and FICT is an iPhone and Android app that builds an animated story one 5 or 10 second scene at a time while you choose what happens next.
What is the difference between a story video and an interactive animated story?
A story video is linear: you write the whole script and get one finished film. In an interactive animated story, such as FICT, Cutscene or Gameer, the viewer picks what happens next and the story branches from that choice.
