22 Choose Your Own Adventure Games for PC, Console and Phone

Illustrated scene of a hooded traveler on a glowing forest path at night, with a ruined tower in the distance
Short answer

The best-known choose your own adventure games are cinematic thrillers like Detroit: Become Human, Until Dawn and The Quarry, where characters can die. Text adventures such as 80 Days, Choice of Robots and Fallen London are closer to the old gamebooks. For something new, AI games like AI Dungeon or FICT generate the next scene from your choice.

"Choose your own adventure" started as a book series, but the idea spread to every kind of game. Today the label covers big-budget console thrillers, free browser games you read like a novel, and an app that writes the next scene the moment you choose. This list sorts 22 of them by type so you can find the kind you actually want. Platforms and price models come from each game's official store or developer page, checked on October 16, 2026. Prices change by region, so we left them out.

Cinematic choose your own adventure games

These play like a film you steer. You make dialogue and action choices, often against a timer, and a bad call can kill a main character while the story keeps going without them.

  • Detroit: Become Human (Quantic Dream). You play three androids in a near-future Detroit. The game's pitch is that every decision, however small, changes the outcome. Characters can die, and the story continues around the gap.
  • Until Dawn (Supermassive Games; 2024 remake by Ballistic Moon). A teen horror story built on "butterfly effect" choices that decide who lives or dies, with endings in "hundreds of variations," as PlayStation's page puts it. The remake is on PS5 and PC.
  • The Quarry (Supermassive Games). Nine camp counselors, any of whom can die. Friends can join online and vote on key choices. Steam offers a free prologue trial.
  • As Dusk Falls (INTERIOR/NIGHT). A drama told in two "books" that span 30 years. Your choices decide who survives and who the characters become, and replays lead to very different outcomes.
  • Heavy Rain (Quantic Dream). A thriller with four playable characters. Your choices decide who lives or dies, and that decides the ending.

Episodic choice games

  • Life Is Strange (DONTNOD). You can rewind time, which lets you test a choice and take it back, up to a point. It has multiple endings. The first episode is free on Steam.
  • The Walking Dead: Season 1 (Telltale Games). Choices carry across five episodes, and some have to be made before a timer runs out.
  • The Wolf Among Us (Telltale Games). A mystery in five episodes where the timing of your choices matters too. Telltale announced a majority closure in 2018 and was relaunched under LCG Entertainment in 2019. Its site now lists a sequel, but we found no confirmed release date on an official page.

Live-action and FMV choose your own adventure games

These are the closest thing to Netflix's Bandersnatch, which is no longer on Netflix (see what happened to Netflix's interactive shows).

  • Late Shift (CtrlMovie). A live-action heist film with more than 180 decision points and 7 endings. You get a few seconds to choose and the film never pauses.
  • Her Story (Sam Barlow). Not branching in the usual sense: you type keywords into an old police video database and piece the story together in any order.
  • Immortality (Sam Barlow / Half Mermaid). You "match cut" between clips from three lost films to work out what happened to their star.

Narrative adventures where dialogue is the choice

  • Oxenfree (Night School Studio). A supernatural story where your dialogue choices shape relationships and the story, and a radio is how you deal with spirits. On mobile it is also included with a Netflix membership.
  • Pentiment (Obsidian). An investigation story where your choices have consequences that last across generations, with multiple endings.
  • Disco Elysium (ZA/UM). A dialogue-driven detective RPG with 24 skills that color every conversation. You decide how to handle every suspect.

Text choose your own adventure games (the gamebook feel)

If you grew up with the paper books, these feel the most familiar. For the books themselves, see our choose your own adventure books for adults.

  • 80 Days (inkle). Race around the world in 80 days. Each city is a short interactive story, and you juggle money, health and time between them.
  • Choice of Robots (Choice of Games). About 300,000 words of pure text covering roughly 30 years of your character's life as a robot builder, with numbered choices on every page.
  • Fallen London (Failbetter Games). A free, long-running text RPG where, in its own words, every choice has a consequence. It runs in any browser, desktop or phone, with no install.
  • Reigns (Nerial). Every choice is a card you swipe left or right, balancing four powers in a kingdom. When your ruler dies, the next one takes over.
  • Lifeline (3 Minute Games). The story arrives as real-time text messages that come in through the day as notifications. You can rewind to earlier choices.
  • Episode and Chapters. Free mobile story apps where your choices change the story and relationships. Some choices and outfits cost in-app currency, which is worth knowing before you start.

AI choose your own adventure games

Every game above was written in advance. However big the branching tree is, someone wrote each branch. AI games remove that ceiling: you can type almost any action and the game writes, or animates, what happens next.

  • AI Dungeon (Latitude). The best-known AI text adventure. You type any action and the AI continues the story. You can also rewind turns. It runs on the web and on Apple devices, with a free tier and paid plans.
  • FICT (our app). Instead of text, each choice becomes a 5 or 10 second animated scene with narration or dialogue. You get three suggested actions or can type your own, and the scenes add up to a film you can replay from the start. It is on iPhone and Android.

Text AI is faster and better for long roleplay. Animated AI is better when you want to see the world and keep a film at the end. We compare both, plus browser options like PlayCYOA, in AI choose your own adventure: text vs. animated apps.

A FICT story starts from a "What if…" premise. After that, every choice becomes the next animated scene.

Make your own choose your own adventure game

The lowest-cost way in is Twine. Its own site calls it "an open-source tool for telling interactive, nonlinear stories." It runs in a browser, it is free, and you can publish or even sell what you make. You write passages and link them, and Twine draws the branching map for you. Our guide to how to write a choose your own adventure story covers structure, endings and how to stop the tree from exploding.

If you would rather direct than write every branch, FICT works the other way around:

  1. Write a "What if…" premise: your hero, the world, the mood and an art style such as anime, watercolor or 3D. Or pick a story from the in-app shelf.
  2. Watch the first animated scene.
  3. Pick one of three suggested actions, or type your own.
  4. Your choice becomes the next scene. Choices are permanent, so every film is one path with real consequences.
  5. Keep going as long as you like, then replay the whole film from the start.

New players get 20 free credits. A 5 second scene costs 10 credits and a 10 second scene costs 20, and a failed scene is refunded once. The sample film The Last Train is free to watch. There is no login and no public feed. For more apps in this space, see the best interactive story apps.

Frequently asked questions

What is a choose your own adventure game?

It is a game where the story branches on your decisions, like the gamebooks where you turned to a different page for each choice. In video games this ranges from cinematic thrillers where characters can die, to text adventures where you read and pick numbered options, to AI games that write or animate the next scene from whatever you choose.

What are some free choose your own adventure games?

Fallen London is free to play in a web browser. Life Is Strange gives away its first episode on Steam, The Quarry has a free prologue trial on Steam, Choice of Games makes its older catalog free to read, and AI Dungeon has a free tier. Twine is free if you want to make your own.

What are good choose your own adventure games on PlayStation?

Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain, Until Dawn (the 2024 remake is on PS5), The Quarry, Life Is Strange and Pentiment are all listed on PlayStation's own store pages. Most cinematic choice games from Quantic Dream and Supermassive Games are on PlayStation.

Are there choose your own adventure games on mobile?

Yes. 80 Days, Her Story, Oxenfree and Reigns are on iPhone, and several also on Android. Lifeline plays out as real-time text messages. Episode and Chapters are free story apps paid for with in-app currency, and FICT turns your choices into animated scenes on iPhone and Android.

Can I make my own choose your own adventure game?

Yes. Twine is a free, open-source tool for branching text stories that runs in a browser, and you can publish what you make. If you would rather direct an animated story than write every branch, an AI app like FICT generates the next scene after each choice.
